Situated at the top of a limestone hill overlooking Cairo, the silhouette of the citadel is dominated by the cupolas and minarets of the alabaster mosque of Mohamed Ali, certainly the most remarkable building, a masterpiece of 19th century architecture.

The second mosque was built in 1318 by Sultan El Nasser Mohamed, one of the most beautiful buildings of the 14th century Mameluke period.
